CSMA Data Boosts Product Development

Picture Research carried out by materials analysis expert CSMA, has enabled a major health care company to significantly advance its research and development programme for a leading consumer brand.

Expert analysis was required that would examine the effects of a product formulation on a specific in-vitro biomaterial. With an extensive background in biomaterial product testing, including teeth, hair, nail and skincare products, CSMA was the natural partner for this investigative work.

CSMA used surface analysis and depth profiling techniques to investigate the action of novel formulation additives at the extreme surface of an in-vitro biomaterial.

The results of this testing provided unequivocal evidence that the formulation additive under scrutiny was not only present at the extreme surface of the material, but had also become fixed in the biological material and substituted itself for atoms within the matrix.

Knowledge of this substitution mechanism has greatly enhanced the company’s understanding of this process and will help steer future R & D programmes for the client. The CSMA research may also lead to patents being taken out, and will certainly result in an extended and enhanced consumer offer.

CSMA is subsidiary of CERAM, the internationally renowned centre for materials and technology based in Stoke-on-Trent.
